چکیده

Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 75 drilled into igneous basement in the Angola Basin at Site 530, located about 20 km north of the escarpment at the eastern end of the Walvis Ridge. Petrographic and geochemical characteristics of the basalts indicate that the basement is quite uniform, variations in chemical composition being related to weathering, crystal fractionation, and the modal abundances of individual minerals. These basalts are similar to those drilled at Sites 527 and 528 on the central section of the Walvis Ridge, but are less enriched in incompatible elements than basalts dredged from the eastern end of the Walvis Ridge. They show distinct compositional differences from mid-ocean ridge basalts, which suggests that the Walvis Ridge hot spot has influenced the basement of the southern part of the Angola Basin. Comparison of the chemistry of Site 530 basalts with those drilled during Leg 74 indicates that the implied variation in mantle source is not in accord with any simple along-ridge progression, but may be related to vertical zonation within the volcanic pile.

19. Petrology of Siliceous Rocks Recovered from Marginal Seas of the Western Pacific, Leg 31, Deep Sea Drilling Project

Siliceous sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age were recovered at three of the nine sites drilled during Leg 31 (Table 1). Only relatively small amounts of lithified material were retrieved, but these rocks are particularly interesting because they include three distinct types of siliceous rock and because each type occurs with a distinct sediment lithology. The kinds of rocks sampled are (with lit...

Petrology, geochemistry, and petrogenesis of mafic dykes from the Kermanshah Ophiolite in Sahneh-Harsin area of Western Iran

The Kermanshah ophiolite complex is a part of the Mediterranean–Zagros–Oman Tethyan ophiolites, located in the structural–tectonic zone of western Iran in the northern part of the Zagros main thrust. Doleritic sheeted dykes are well exposed within the ophiolite in the south of Sahneh. These dykes contain high MgO, Na2O, low TiO2 (2O5, and K2O contents, and high FeOt/MgO and LILE/HFSE ratios. Th...

Leg 210 Preliminary Report

Ocean Drilling Program Leg 210 was devoted to studying the history of rifting and postrift sedimentation in the Newfoundland–Iberia rift. Drilling was conducted in the Newfoundland Basin along a transect conjugate to previous drilling on the Iberia margin (Legs 149 and 173). This was the first time that deep-sea drilling has been conducted on both sides of a nonvolcanic rift in order to underst...

Geochemistry and petrology of gabbrodiorites from Palang Dar Area (Northeast Damghan)

Palang Dar gabbrodioritic intrusion cropped out in about 30 Km NE of Damghan in the eastern part of the Alborz structural unit. In this area a few small-scale gabbrodioritic intrusions and diabasic dikes with Middle Jurassic age intruded into shale, sandstones and limestones of Shemshak Formation. Emplacement of this intrusion into host rocks are associated with contact metamorphism and formati...

Petrology and geochemistry of gabbro part of Samsour Ophiolite, South East of Iran

Samsour ophiolite is located in Sistan and Baluchestan Province, about 210 Km southwest of Zahedan city. Based on structural and sedimentary classification of Iran, this ophiolite is located adjacent to NosratAbad-Karvandar fault and belongs to Sistan suture zone.  Rock units of this ophiolite are mainly composed of ultramafic, including gabbro (Layerd and massive) and doleriteic. In the micros...
